Coffee Chats ☕ August 9, 2026

Hi! I'm alive!

Let me start by apologizing for missing not one, but two newsletters. I'd better have a good excuse, right? And I totally do. Obviously. Duh.

*awkward shuffling*

Okay, fine. I'm just bad at managing my time. I mean, yes, we've been busy with travel and hosting friends. I've still been slogging through the job search, and also, you know, trying to finish this novel. Summer scheduling is hard. But honestly, it's mostly that I keep procrastinating on writing these—and by the time I've needed to send them, I've been tired of staring at screens and hunching over my keyboard.

I guess that's my real excuse—I've probably been working on the novel too much. Draft 3 has required way, way more time and energy than anticipated—about as many total hours as Draft 2, but in roughly half the time. The good part is that I'm really happy with how the draft has turned out and I've managed to stick to my overly-ambitious/borderline unhealthy timeline, so...that's nice.

Anyway! Let me end by apologizing for coming back with this abbreviated edition. After a final compact newsletter later this month, Coffee Chats will return to its normal schedule and length in September. Probably. Most likely. Hopefully!

Until then, I'm sending love your way. Talk soon.

☕ Project Curses

I am very, very nearly done with polishing Part 3 of the manuscript for the final time (unless I'm lucky enough to get an agent and editor—then I get to do it all again!). After this, all that's left is to make final tweaks based on feedback from my current group of early readers—then it's on to querying, which feels a little surreal.

Once querying begins, it's all out of my hands—which, honestly, sounds okay at this point. I'm really proud of how the novel has turned out, and I've learned so, so much. I'm really looking forward to a little break, and then getting started on something new. Here's to the final sprint!

PS – Early readers: You can expect to receive Part 3 a little early. Should be either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week!

PPS – Have a great day :)

Hi from Missouri! Hope all of my U.S.-based readers had a lovely (and not too explosive) holiday yesterday. I'm going to keep today's newsletter brief because of said holiday weekend and since I'm currently traveling. Don't worry—I'm still sitting on half an essay I wrote for last time, so we'll be back to intros that are waaaaay too long before you know it. For the time being I want to say a big thank you to everyone who signed up to be an early reader; I feel really good about this draft...

Hello! I had an entire mini essay outlined for today before I remembered that I'm supposed to focus on reading! You, readers! I discussed my plans for the next (and hopefully final) round of feedback on my manuscript in the last newsletter. I'm pleased to report that I'm on pace to finish my current edits on schedule, which means that the manuscript will be ready for another round of reading around mid-July. It also means that I can officially share the link to sign up for what I'm calling...

Hey there! Do you ever think about roads? I think about roads a lot. It's the little things, you know? The thousand factors, little histories, and decisions made that put a particular road in a particular place for a particular reason, connecting two points, an end and a beginning, and all the points between. They're very human, very technological, very cooperative things, really. I'm not a particular fan of car-centric design, but I remember hearing once, when I was young, that basically...
